Timeline of Earth Day Events

Earth Day started as a peaceful protest march where 20 million Americans took to the streets to advocate for environmental reform. It was extremely popular among college students in particular and the first Earth Day took place on April 22, 1970. This date was chosen specifically by the organizers to be between spring break and finals week for the target audience.

Earth Day 1970

In 1990, Earth Day’s 20th Anniversary, it became a global event where 200 million people across 120 countries participated in major environmental protection rallies. Recycling was a major topic of discussion that year.

Fun Fact: Google’s First Earth Day Doodle was created in 2001!

In 2018, Greta Thunberg (then 15) protested in front of the Swedish Parliament for global warming awareness. The use of her protest sign “School Strike For Climate'' was the talk of global news for weeks! This protest started a chain of school strikes across the world. By 2019, more than 1 million students participated in 2,200 strikes in 125 different countries to protest global warming.

2022 will be Earth Day’s 50 Anniversary! Find out more about this year's events below!

Why Does it Matter?

Earth Day is celebrated annually to acknowledge climate change, advancement, and a cleaner planet. This day is important because it brings billions of people together to make real change to our planet. We all know that addressing climate change, global warming, recycling, ect. demands high profile involvement.

The first Earth Day in 1970 inspired various environmental legislation to be passed in the United States, most notably the Clean Water Act (1972) and the Toxic Substances Control Act (1976).

On Earth Day in 2016, the United Nations adopted the Paris Climate Agreement, which saw nations around the world aim to keep global warming below 2.7 Fahrenheit.

This 50 year old celebration has made tremendous progress, but there is still much to do! It is so important to participate in any way that you can, from planting trees at home, to participating in a rally or conference, or even to protesting in front of your own government.
